Fashion designer Shona Joy Thatcher, of the eponymous clothing brand, and her property investor husband, Marty McGrath, are offloading their Mediterranean-inspired family home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs with a guide of $16 million.

The Dover Heights home has come a long way since the couple purchased the block for $2,201,350 in 2014. They have gone on to transform the 618-square-metre parcel from a double red brick house into a modern luxury.

Teaming up with Andrew Burges Architects, the firm responsible for the redesign of Parramatta Aquatic Centre, and Robert Plumb Build, the couple built a five-bedroom, four-bathroom house that evokes the nostalgia of a Greek island holiday.

With interiors designed by Design Daily and Dangar Barin Smith gardens, no corner has been overlooked in the home.

The couple’s family have already traded Sydney for Byron Bay, having purchased a three-bedroom house for $7.9 million in 2021 in Marty’s name.

It’s not the only home in their property portfolio, as the couple purchased a hinterland acreage in Federal for $2.7 million a year before that. But they will still have a Sydney bolthole, a three-bedroom unit in North Bondi, which they paid $2.09 million for in 2016, despite only recently offloading another unit, this time a two-bedder in Bondi Beach, for $2.05 million.

Shona’s fashion brand, Shona Joy, is synonymous with wedding occasion dresses for brides, bridesmaids and wedding guests, thanks to the attractive price point, wide range of sizes and colours, with one dress in particular, the “La Lune” lace-back maxi dress, selling more than 38,000 times.

That style alone has generated more than $12.5 million in sales since 2020, Shona told The Australian Financial Review. In a testament to her brand, she is celebrating her 25th year in the fashion industry.

Their Dover Heights home is being sold through Alex Phillips of PPD Real Estate, who declined to comment when contacted. The home is scheduled to go under the hammer on September 27.

Developer on the move

Mirvac’s head of finance Stephen Thomson and his wife, Celeste, are offloading their mid-century modernist home in Bellevue Hill with a buyer’s guide of $15 million.

The couple enlisted architect Henry Rossler to renovate the five-bedroom, three-bathroom house.

No doubt the location of the blue-chip address has added to the property’s marked uptick in value since the Thomsons purchased the 657-square-metre parcel for $4.385 million in 2013 from Dr David Sonnabend AM, professor of orthopaedics and traumatic surgery at the University of Sydney, and his wife, Pamela.

But Rossler’s design has also added a long list of features, including a rooftop entertaining terrace with sweeping panoramic views, Calacatta marble kitchen, a 600-bottle wine cellar and a gym.

Prior to Steve’s time at the developer giant, he held directorship roles at software company Microsoft and infrastructure company Broadspectrum, which was formerly known as Transfield Services and is now part of Ventia, as well as drilling and engineering business Easternwell Group.

The Thomsons home is selling through Maclay Longhurst of Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty, who could not be contacted for comment. It is scheduled to go to auction on 1 October.

The six-bedroom, four-bathroom has since been meticulously restored by architect David Springett in an award-winning transformation.

Set on a rare 800-square-metre parcel just four kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, the home is one of four remaining that Young built in the suburb known as the Witches’ Houses.

Purchased for $700,000 in 1989 by the Hebers, it is where the couple ran their businesses in the early days.

The skincare pioneer introduced the first range of chemical exfoliant alpha hydroxy acid (AHA)-based cosmeceutical skincare products to Australia and New Zealand in 1991. Less than a decade later, the cosmetic physician created Ultraceuticals.

The Hebers’ home is selling through Nick Jones of Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty.

Moving on from Milsons Point

Former pokies boss Jamie Odell has called time on his Sydney bolthole, selling his Milsons Point pad for $7.35 million.

Jamie, who was the chief executive of pokies and gambling company Aristocrat, purchased the three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit for $3.065 million in 2013.
