An emerging Canberra filly can take a giant stride back towards metropolitan opposition when she tackles a very competitive benchmark 66 handicap to close Monday’s feature Goulburn meeting.
Extrio, a three-year-old daughter of renowned all-conditions sire Extreme Choice, has always given her long list of owners the impression she is capable of matching it in Saturday company.
And race by race, she is slowly starting to live up to that potential.
Originally homed with two metropolitan stables, Extrio finally found her way to the Luke Pepper yard at Canberra late last spring.
And she hit the ground running in the capital, winning her maiden comfortably at home on Melbourne Cup day before three mixed and somewhat disappointing efforts around the region after that.
But she rediscovered her best in the New Year, sweeping home to easily win a Class 1 at Wagga.
Given a lengthy break, Extrio then returned with an even more impressive win last month in a BM 58 at Moruya over 1010m, charging home from well back under 60kg.
Such was the stable confidence she was sent to Canterbury for a much deeper midweek BM 64 Hcp over 1250m.
While running out of condition late and missing a place behind the smart Hello Captain, there are serious form factors on her side.
She was coming off a four-week break, wasn’t suited settling closer to the speed from a low draw, and finished through inferior inside ground.
Extrio jumps from the outside barrier in a big field at Goulburn over 1300m, but that may just suit her pattern late in the day, getting to the outside on a soft surface.
In a wide and tough market, Extrio was around $6.50 in early betting, behind the Ciaron Maher-trained Harry’s Halo ($4.50) who needed scratchings to get a run.
