How would you describe your style? It’s a mix of classic and vintage.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A 1920s cream silk blouse I bought in a vintage store in New York City. I’ve also got a pair of Levi’s 501s that I’ve had since high school.

And the most recent addition? A little grey knit singlet top with silver sequins that I bought in Athens.

What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? I wear Australian Stitch boat-neck long-sleeve tees in black or white almost every day. Also, a black Reformation miniskirt and pair of All Is a Gentle Spring low-rise, tailored trousers that are the perfect black pant; they go with everything.

What would you wear … on a first date? A miniskirt with a cool vintage belt, slinky top and knee-high boots. … on a plane? Wide-leg Adidas three-stripe trackies with an Australian Stitch long-sleeve cotton top and ballet flats. … on the red carpet? I like to wear Australian designers. Specifically, I love working with Anna Plunkett from Romance Was Born. For the Logies last year, I wore a Romance Was Born dress made from vintage, hand-beaded fabric.

What’s your favourite fashion era? The 1970s for the fringing, suede, miniskirts and long messy hair.

Who are your favourite designers? I like independent Australian designers such as All Is a Gentle Spring, Olga Joan and My Mum Made It; I just bought a cute yellow baby doll dress from them. Also, Buci NYC and UK designer Ellie Misner.

Do you wear perfume? I don’t. I’m a Libra, I can never decide on one.

Any go-to jewellery? All my jewellery is my mum’s [bridal designer Helen English], cool pieces I’ve stolen off her such as chunky silver rings and bangles.

Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child? I was obsessed with ponchos. There was one knitted pastel pink poncho my mum couldn’t take off me when I was about seven.

What was your first fashion moment? Being on the cover of Barbie magazine when I was a toddler. I wore a nappy and little angel wings.

And your worst fashion mistake? Buying and wearing fast fashion. I’ve been guilty of buying some cheap stuff in the past that looks weird, feels crap and is terrible for the environment.

What’s on your wish list? I need to replace my black MM6 Maison Margiela “’Anatomic Numeric” ballet flats. They have holes in the soles.

English wants to replace her Maison Margiela shoes that have worn out.

Is there something you’d never wear? I used to say skinny jeans but you can never say never with fashion, things always come back. I’ve got boot-cut jeans that are getting tighter and tighter. It’s exposure therapy.

Is there a current trend you like? Low-rise belts slung over skirts and pants, like what Isabel Marant is doing.

What do you sleep in? My ex-boyfriends’ T-shirts.

What shoes do you wear most often? My Margiela ballet flats and a pair of Solovair Mary Janes.

Who’s your favourite fashion icon? I love Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s ’90s style. And Diane Keaton because she never went with the trends, she always dressed for herself.

What do you wear on a typical working day? I wish I was someone who looked chic on set but realistically when you’re working late nights and long hours, sleep is more important. I’m chucking on trackies and a tee. Then it’s my costume; for Ghosts Australia that’s a beautiful, kimono-style wedding dress.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? I’ll be in black trousers, a long-sleeve tee and ballet flats, going to the farmers’ markets and then cooking something that takes a long time. It’s my thing.

Ines English stars in Ghosts Australia on Channel 10 and Paramount+.
