Companies across Queensland – and around the world – are in a rush to claim a piece of the Brisbane Olympics action, with the starter’s pistol fired on procurement.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee announced on Friday it would launch its procurement program at The Star on October 8.

Committee president Andrew Liveris said more than 50 expressions-of-interest packages would be announced at the paid event.

“The Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime event and opportunity for many businesses to be involved, and we’re deliberately launching our procurement process early,” he said.

“We want to give as many businesses as much time to plan, prepare and pitch for work.

“From sports equipment to temporary infrastructure; hospitality services to food and beverages, we will have thousands of procurement opportunities on offer in the lead-up to the Games in 2032.”

Liveris will be joined by Brisbane 2032 chief executive Cindy Hook, the Paris 2024 Organising Committee’s chief finance and human resources officer, Fabrice Lacroix, Queensland Sports Minister Tim Mander MP, and other guests to open up the first tranche of opportunities for immediate EOIs.

The announcement came days after the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority opened up its own EOIs for a principal architect for the main Olympic stadium and the nearby National Aquatic Centre at Victoria Park.

A source told this masthead interest in the role in the days since GIICA went to market had been “extremely strong”.

The successful principal architects would partner with GIICA during the early contractor involvement process for both the 63,000-seat main stadium and the NAC, which would hold 25,000 people during the Games and 8000 in legacy mode.

GIICA chief executive Simon Crooks said it was a rare opportunity, one of which architects around the world would dream.

“This is a truly international moment, and we must cast our net wide to get the best design, complemented by cutting-edge innovation in sustainability, accessibility, and athlete and visitor experience,” he said.

“We’ve already been overwhelmed with interest from architects for both the stadium and the National Aquatic Centre, and this next step allows all those with a bold idea to come forward for formal consideration.”

Crooks said the stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies would give audiences and athletes among their longest-lasting memories, “so getting a visionary design is key to the entire experience”.

“The National Aquatic Centre will be the forever home of our nation’s favourite Olympic and Paralympic sport, swimming,” he added.

“The successful architects will be key partners during this crucial period in project development, and we are looking forward to seeing the high quality of responses.”
