An armed man was shot by police during an altercation at a property south of Brisbane on Friday night.

Police arrived at the Caswell Road property in Woodhill, 12 kilometres north of Beaudesert, about 9pm.

A person inside the property had called police requesting a welfare check, Inspector Emma Reilly said on Saturday.

The 41-year-old man had multiple stab wounds before police arrived. Police are investigating whether the wounds were self-inflicted or caused by another person, Reilly said.

The man allegedly confronted officers with a rifle when they arrived.

“The man allegedly advanced on police, and he was subsequently shot by officers,” police said.

He was given first aid by officers before being flown in a stable condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he remains.

The welfare check had not been flagged as high-risk, Reilly said.

“This incident just highlights the inherent risk that our police face every day while serving the community,” she said.

“Our officers come to work to protect Queensland, often placing themselves in danger.

“Obviously this is a traumatic time for those officers and for those who were present and witnessed the incident. Our thoughts are with all of them.”

A crime scene has been declared, and the Ethical Standards Command will investigate the shooting.
