Hawks missing Gunston

By Danny Russell

Hawthorn missed injured Jack Gunston (foot) while Jack Ginnivan was being treated on the bench but he’s back on field now after a knock to his knee.

They have had four more inside entries for this game - 24 to 20 - but have managed just four goals for the game.

They trail by four points.

The Demons defence has held sway thanks largely to Jake Bowey (12 possessions), Jake Lever (ten) and Daniel Turner who has taken four marks.

The other Max kicks a goal

By

Hawks young forward Max Ramsden has marked and booted his first goal of the day.

The Hawks haven’t made the most of their entries inside the 50m arc.

Meanwhile, the Dees have lost backup ruckman Max Heath for the rest of the quarter as he has been sent for a concussion test.

It’s a Petty Saturday at the MCG

By

Harrison Petty has won the footy, shrugged a tackle and snapped his third goal. Talk about a purple (is that red and blue) patch!

Josh Weddle can’t handle the veteran swingman at the moment.

Let’s see if the Dees can keep getting the ball to Petty while he is burning so hot.

Ginnivan sore after knee knock as Pickett goals

By

Hawks star Jack Ginnivan took a knock to his knee in a contest and immediately headed to the bench.

He’s been treated by the Hawks’ medical team at the moment but looks in some discomfort.

Meanwhile, Kysaiah Pickett has marked and goaled for the Dees after being taken around the neck in a tackle.

Dees, Hawks pay dearly for errors

You can’t point at the big screen, Ed.

Melbourne gave up a crucial advantage late in the first quarter after wingman Ed Langdon gave away a 50-metre penalty for umpire dissent.

It allowed Hawk Dylan Moore to stroll into an open goal.

Quarter-time stats

QT: Melbourne 3.3 (21) to Hawthorn 3.3 (21)

By

It’s been a superb opening term at the MCG with the two clubs close together at the first change.

The action has been fast and entertaining as expected while turnovers have been punished by either side.

Hawks star Nick Watson’s late goal tied the scores.

Analysis: King wins the early tactical battle

By

Dees coach Steven King has won the early tactical battle against Sam Mitchell.

With Tom Barrass out, he has exposed Hawthorn’s lack of height down back by starting Harrison Petty as a deep forward.

The hot-and-cold Petty has kicked the first two goals of the game on Hawk Josh Weddle, and should have had a third but dropped a mark in front of the big sticks.

Dees bounce back

By

The Dees just keep on rolling with the punches, and that is exactly what they’ve done on this occasion as Max Gawn sent the ball long to his forwards and Jacob van Rooyen was first to get the bouncing ball and snapped it through.

The Dees have been super efficient at their attacking end to start this match.

Dees 20, Hawks 15 with three mins to go in Q1.

Moore goals after a 50-metre penalty

By

Ed Langdon from the Dees was frustrated with a free kick in the back pocket, so he pointed the umpires’ attention towards the replay on the MCG big screen.

That is an automatic 50-metre penalty, so the umpire took Hawthorn’s Dylan Moore to the goal line and he sent the ball high into the third tier.

That was poor discipline from the Dees, although their fans are already fuming with some of the decisions in the first term.
