AFL Friday night LIVE: Bulldogs’ hot first half but Fremantle’s goal on half-time infuriates Beveridge

The match has tightened up

By

It’s only 10 minutes into the third quarter, but scoring has dried up. One goal each as Fremantle look to make further inroads into the lead.

Ryley Sanders slotted a goal, before Sam Switkowski replied for The Dockers. The Dogs have a 15-point advantage.

It’s half-time in Adelaide

By

It’s a low-scoring tussle. Scores were tied (22 points each) with about one minute of footy left ...

However, enter Zak Butters! The Port Adelaide gun slotted a brilliant goal from the boundary after getting a free kick.

Port have a slender lead at the break.

Crow Walker suffers suspected hammy

By Steve Barrett in Adelaide

Taylor Walker cut a forlorn figure on Adelaide’s bench after exiting with a suspected hamstring injury late in the first quarter of the Showdown against Port Adelaide.

The Power hold a 12-point lead at the first break, but the big news is big Tex.

Walker hasn’t had a touch yet, and might not get the chance to register one.

After spending a large stretch of the quarter having his right hamstring attended to, Walker came back on and had no real impact, before coming off late.

Adelaide Oval is heaving as usual for the 59th iteration of the AFL’s fiercest rivalry, the venue’s iconic hill very much pro-Port and the front-row seats at the River End full of Crows colours.

Analysis: The Bulldogs needed half-time

By

They set the early pace in this game, but were showing signs of tiring.

They led by 26 points at quarter-time, but that was dragged back to 14 by the long break, including a frustrating buzzer beater just as the half-time siren blew – a long-range goal from Murphy Reid that left Dogs coach Luke Beveridge fuming.

One wonders if the Dogs are leaving too much to two few. They have the four highest possession winners on the ground - Marcus Bontempelli (22), Ryley Sanders (15), Matthew Kennedy (15), Bailey Dale (15).

In comparison, Freo has been stunted and docile. They can expect a baking from coach Justin Longmuir. The Dockers look to have the most upside, but we thought that before the game.

Both sides have 20 inside 50s. The Bulldogs have been slightly more efficient. They have definitely been more determined. An upset win is not beyond them.

What’s happening in Adelaide?

By

At quarter-time in Adelaide Oval, Port Adelaide have the running. They’ve eked out a two-goal lead against their arch nemesis.

Half-time: There’s the siren ...

By

Well, well, well … what a moment on the siren. Murphy Reid has slotted a great goal on the run with just seconds left. The Docker let fly from about 50 metres. A delightful kick. But Luke Beveridge quickly showed his displeasure in the box. Was that a curse from the Doggies coach?

HT: Western Bulldogs 9.6 (60) lead Fremantle 7.4 (46)

Half-time just around the corner

By

Fremantle just scored a goal through Neil Erasmus. It has cut the margin to 19 points. The Dockers can ill-afford to concede another major before the main break.
