An accused murderer allegedly drove off in the car of a man he had just stabbed to death on the Gold Coast.

The 27-year-old man is accused of stabbing a 57-year-old man to death at a unit on Dutton Street in Coolangatta after 1pm on Thursday.

The younger man was then reported to police by local workers for acting strangely.

“He had a conversation with some people who were working in the area, and we’re in the process of speaking to them,” Detective Acting Inspector Michael Corby said on Friday.

“I understand there to be more than one person who probably observed him or spoke with him at that time.

“There was some construction happening, they were associated to that in some way.”

The two men were known to each other, and police understand they lived together at the Coolangatta unit, Corby said.

The Acting Inspector alleged the younger man drove away in the 57-year-old’s car after the incident.

“That’s the vehicle that was sought,” he said.

The younger man was tracked by officers to a property in Upper Coomera – also on the Gold Coast – where he was arrested as he got out of a vehicle about 2.04pm.

A knife was seized by police at the Upper Coomera property.

“It’ll take some time for us to be certain as to whether the knife that we’ve seized actually is the murder weapon or whether we are looking for another knife,” Corby said.

Paramedics arrived at the home to find the older man with life-threatening injuries, and he died shortly after.

The 27-year-old was charged with one count of murder and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and was scheduled to front Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was known to police before the incident, Corby said.

“At this stage, police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident, however, investigations are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances,” Corby said.

Anyone with information that could be linked to the investigation, or footage of either crime scene, is urged to contact police.

“We’d be particularly interested to talk to anyone who may have dash cam that was driving through that area around that time,” Corby said.
