Police have warned the community against “taking the law into their own hands” after a 31-year-old man was arrested and charged over allegedly sending sexualised messages to teenage boys.
While the nature of how the community got involved was unclear, police issued a warning to “strongly discourage” the behaviour.

“WA Police appreciates community assistance in reporting alleged criminal activity and information from the public is instrumental in identifying and disrupting criminal offences, but it must be done safely and lawfully,” a police statement read.
“WA Police strongly discourage the community from taking the law into their own hands or engaging in any behaviour that could put them at risk.
“Police are specifically trained and equipped to respond to reports of all crime, and individuals or groups are putting themselves in harm’s way by attempting to take action against alleged offenders.”

Detectives from the Child Exploitation Operations Squad charged the 31-year-old Riverton man following an investigation into his online activities.
It will be alleged between September 1 and 7, the accused man used social media to communicate with two teenagers who identified themselves as a 14-year-old boy.
It will be further alleged that the man sent a number of sexualised messages to the boys.
The man then allegedly met the teenagers at a shopping complex in Joondalup.
He was scheduled to appear before Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with one count of intent to procure a person believed to be under 16 years for sexual activity.
