Prime Minister in Perth following $12b subs promise

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is waking up in Perth this morning, fresh off making a $12 billion commitment to turn WA’s Henderson precinct into a nuclear submarine hub.

Albanese is expected to make an appearance on local radio this morning before flying to Papua New Guinea to finalise a defence agreement there.

WA Premier Roger Cook said the Henderson precinct announcement would directly benefit Western Australia.

“For us, this is a big deal,” he said.

“This represents over 10,000 local WA jobs both in construction and the ongoing work.”

US Secretary of State has privately assured Federal Defence Minister Richard Marles that the AUKUS agreement won’t be terminated, despite the Trump administration giving mixed signals, according to The Washington Post.

Across the country and around the world

Here’s what’s making news across the country and around the world this morning:

  • Australians are marking down the Albanese government for its handling of immigration amid a debate about how best to manage the country’s population growth, as one in every two voters polled says the permanent migration rate remains too high.
  • The man arrested in the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk is not co-operating with authorities, but investigators are working to establish a motive for the shooting by talking to his friends and family, Utah Governor Spencer Cox said on Sunday.
