A West Australian kite surfer has survived an attack by a great white shark near Prevelly on Monday night.

The encounter was captured on a local surf camera, with foil board rider ‘Andy’ seen riding with several others at 5pm before his board is suddenly sucked under the water, followed by fierce whipping and splashing.

Andy later told onlookers on shore that he came face-to-face with the shark underwater, before clambering onto his sail to get out of the water.

“I fell onto it, it was wrapped around me. You’ve got two leashes, you’ve got a leash around your waist and one on your wrist, and it was like in me, and I was like punching it,” he said.

“Then I had my sail, and I jumped up onto my sail just to get out of the water, and then I started yelling for help.

“Maddo came over, I paddled [back in] and Maddo helped pushed me.”

Vision of the board on the back of Andy’s car shows a huge shark bite mark, with part of the board missing.

“I live to tell the story,” he said, joking he won’t sleep now for a week.

The encounter was reported to Fisheries, with the alert claiming the great white shark was around 50 metres offshore.
