A toddler who was discovered in the luggage compartment of a New Zealand bus was stashed in a suitcase and was only wearing a nappy when she was found.

The bus driver made the discovery after the InterCity bus stopped in Kaiwaka, north of Auckland. The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed, police said on Sunday.

A 27-year-old woman is due to face court on Monday in Auckland’s North Shore on charges of ill-treatment/neglect of a child.

InterCity said it was aware of an incident involving a passenger on one of its services on Sunday, and said nobody was harmed, and the service had since resumed.

“As this is now an active police investigation, we are unable to comment further,” an InterCity spokesperson said on Monday.

Police were called at 12.50pm, after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment during a planned stop in Kaiwaka.

The driver became concerned when he noticed the bag moving, Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said.

When the driver opened the suitcase, he discovered the two-year-old girl.

Radio New Zealand reported the girl was on the bus for almost an hour and was only wearing a nappy when she was rescued. She was taken to hospital, where she remains, undergoing an extensive medical assessment.

Police inquiries continue and further charges cannot be ruled out, Harrison said.

Oranga Tamariki, the New Zealand Ministry for Children, has also been notified. Travel on InterCity buses is free for children under two.
