A crowded boat carrying mostly tourists has capsized off Bali, leaving two people dead and another missing.

The vessel had 80 people on board when it went down off the popular holiday destination of Sanur at about 3pm local time (5pm AEST) on Tuesday, according to Denpasar Search and Rescue (SAR).

Denpasar Search and Rescue said this boat had 80 people on board when it capsized close to Sanur Harbour, on Bali’s east coast, on Tuesday afternoon.

SAR said the dead were Chinese citizens. The missing person was an Indonesian crew member. Every other person registered as being on the transport vessel was accounted for, according to the rescue teams.

It was not immediately clear if Australians were among the 15 people injured.

The boat, which had departed from the island of Nusa Penida, capsized so close to Sanur Harbour that rescuers were able to haul it onto the beach.

Photos released by SAR showed that it would have been crowded with 80 people on board. Seventy-three of the passengers were foreigners, it said.

It is the fourth serious boat accident – three of them deadly – off Bali this year.

Australian Anna Blight died when her snorkelling boat capsized off Nusa Penida in rough seas in March.
