Two foreign tourists believed to be road-tripping from Brisbane are missing in a flooded region inland from Gympie.

Police launched a search on Wednesday morning after the 26-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were last seen around Kilkivan, about 225 kilometres north-west of Brisbane.

Police were notified when the pair – travelling in a silver Subaru Forester to the North Burnett region, inland of Bundaberg – failed to arrive at their destination.

On Wednesday afternoon, police located a silver vehicle on Kilkivan Tansey Road, near McArthur Road, but did not confirm whether it was the missing Subaru.

The pair were not found near the vehicle.

Widespread heavy rain last week flooded Bundaberg and surrounding regions, with large parts of the Central Queensland town inundated, in scenes reminiscent of the 2010 floods.

Kilkivan sits just outside the Barambah Creek catchment, a tributary of the Burnett River.

The town had recorded about 350 millimetres of rain across four days from March 7.

In Bundaberg, power and road access was cut on Wednesday morning – including the city’s two main bridges – as the Burnett River reached a peak of 7.4 metres.

The search for the missing pair continued on Wednesday night, and involved police, SES and helicopters.

Officer also remained at the scene of the recovered vehicle.
