The best dressed celebrities on the Emmys red carpet

When both international politics and the fashion world are unsettled, Hollywood inevitably plays it safe, and the Emmys red carpet this year trod the familiar ground of Old Hollywood glamour.

This season, 15 designers make their debut at major fashion houses, including Jonathan Anderson for Dior womenswear and Matthieu Blazy at Chanel. Unable to wait for new silhouettes and concepts, these stylists turned to trusty sheer dresses, bold colours and intentional flashes of flesh.

Last week, Margot Robbie pushed embellished sheer dresses to the frontline of fashion in an Armani Prive gown, and, at the Emmys, Jenna Ortega picked up the bejewelled baton.

The Wednesday star’s stylist Enrique Melendez secured a halter top consisting of gemstones, pearls and resin pieces worn above a black skirt by former Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton for Givenchy.

It is difficult to believe that the same designer created Kate Middleton’s wedding dress for her marriage to Prince William. We bet there’s a matching tiara for Ortega’s gown in the royal vault if she needs something for the next state dinner.

While the fashion world waits for the debut of Chanel’s new creative director, Matthieu Blazy, at Paris Fashion Week next month, Michelle Williams refused to put her love for the luxury label on hold. With the assistance of her stylist Kate Young, Williams raided the Chanel archives for a single knotted strap gown with gentle ruffles and pearl details in the palest of pinks.

3. Selena Gomez

As a producer and actress for Only Murders in the Building, singer and beauty mogul Selena Gomez was the perfect ambassador for power red.

In a Louis Vuitton gown with an asymmetric neckline, collar detail and train, Gomez refused to be camouflaged by the red carpet.

The French label is now the frontrunner to design Gomez’s wedding dress for her upcoming marriage to music producer Benny Blanco, who accompanied her to the awards ceremony.

4. Sam Nivola

While his The White Lotus co-star Walton Goggins considers the top button of any shirt an optional extra, Sam Nivola, 21, prefers playing by the rules.

Having already appeared in advertisements for the first collection from former Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson for Dior, it’s not surprising Nivola appeared in a black tuxedo and buttoned-up white shirt from the white-hot label.

It’s the floral waistcoat and fringed scarf that push Nivola ahead of Pedro Pascal as the best-dressed man of the night.

5. Lisa

Every awards ceremony needs an over-the-top princess dress. While Parker Posey’s frothy purple Valentino gown was more mad duchess, her The White Lotus co-star and pop sensation Lisa nailed the brief. Breaking away from the actress pack in borrowed Carolina Herrera and Louis Vuitton, Lisa’s pink asymmetric gown, constructed with ribbon fabric, was from LA-based label Lever Couture. How did Ariana Grande miss out on ordering this for the upcoming Wicked sequel press tour?
