The teenager who pleaded guilty to killing a Queensland grandmother in a shopping centre car park will be sentenced on Wednesday.

Vyleen White, 70, died after she was stabbed in the car park of a Redbank Plains shopping centre in February last year.

Her death sent shockwaves through the community, and sparked outrage over juvenile offenders.

Earlier this year, the teenager, who cannot be named under Queensland law, pleaded guilty to her murder in the Supreme Court. He also pleaded guilty to charges of stealing and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

It was believed at the time the motive was to steal her Hyundai Getz.

After he pleaded guilty, White’s husband told reporters outside court that the teenager was “playing god” and chose to kill her, despite her seemingly giving the then 16-year-old her car keys.

When asked previously about sentencing, Mr White said it should be “life for a life”.

White’s daughter, Cindy Micallef, was one of the main forces behind the push for the LNP’s adult crime, adult time laws. In the days after her mother’s killing, Micallef made a public call for unity, as hostility was aimed at the African community.

She has continued to work with prominent members of the African community, such as Beny Bol.

Micallef told Nine News earlier this week she was not at the point of forgiving the offender. “I’m sure many can understand that,” she said.

The sentence is expected to be delivered by Chief Justice Helen Bowskill at 10am.
