You would be forgiven for thinking summer has arrived early in Brisbane, with temperatures predicted to climb to 30 degrees this week – less than a month into spring.

Forecast to arrive on Wednesday is the season’s first 30-degree day – nearly 6 degrees above the long-term September average – with maximum temperatures expected to hover between 27 and 29 degrees until Sunday.

It will be the warmest day since the Anzac Day public holiday on April 25 this year, when the temperature reached 30.2 degrees.

“We are looking at a period of real warmth coming through,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Helen Reid said.

“It is the time of the season where we do start to see those warmer days creeping in.”

Despite the temperature, Brisbaneites will be relieved to know Wednesday is not expected to be uncomfortably humid.

The hottest day recorded so far this year was on January 16, when the temperature soared to 37.4 degrees.

Reid said this week’s temperature spike would be caused by a trough drifting in from the west.

“It will be the first [hot] one for this season, definitely,” she said.

But Reid said it was still too early to pack away the cardigans.

“I wouldn’t want to say that the hot weather has started for the year, and it’s settled in,” she said.

“We still have October to get through … so I wouldn’t rule out the idea of another couple of cold days in there.”

Rain was also possible on Friday and Saturday.

Brisbane’s hottest September day – recorded at the city’s current inner-city weather station – was in 2017, when the temperature reached 37 degrees on September 29.

That year was one of the hottest on record for much of Australia, with unseasonal bursts of heat in September sending temperatures of some parts of the country a full 16 degrees above average.

However, Brisbane’s old Spring Hill weather station recorded a scorching temperature of 38.3 degrees on September 22, 1943.
