It could hit nearly 30 degrees every day this week in Brisbane, with predictions of a sweltering seven days across the state’s south-east.

Thursday and Sunday would probably be particularly uncomfortable, with tops of 35 degrees and rain forecast.

If that temperature is reached, it would be the equal third-hottest day of the year in the River City. The hottest day was January 16, when the mercury peaked at 37.4 degrees.

The coolest day of this week, Saturday, is still on track to reach 28 degrees.

“This time of year has always been temperamental,” meteorologist Livio Regano said.

“We tend to get troughs moving west to east … and it raises the temperature.

“It’ll certainly be in the high 30s on Thursday and there could be storms around as well.”

Thunderstorms at the weekend brought hailstones up to 5cm in diameter to parts of south-east Queensland and left thousands of homes without power.

This week, Ipswich will be even hotter than Brisbane – maximum temperatures in the city were forecast to break 30 degrees for the next seven days straight, and hit 39 on Thursday.

Rain is possible on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Brisbane.

Further west is on track to be even hotter, with heatwave warnings for much of the state inland from Roma.
