Son of Everest champion primed for long-awaited debut in Albury

A promising Canberra three-year-old will be aimed at some autumn sprint features if he starts his career with a bang at Monday’s Albury meeting.

Wild Romeo has undergone a change of scenery before his debut on the border in a Maiden Plate over 1000m.

Formerly with the Bjorn Baker stable at Warwick Farm, the gelding is now in the Luke Pepper yard in Canberra and finally gets his chance to uncork that ability.

A son of 2019 Everest winner Yes Yes Yes, Wild Romeo was given two quiet trials early last year before being handed a long break.

But he returned for a metropolitan trial in mid-October and sat outside the leader early before sailing well clear to win by nearly four lengths, running one of the slicker 900m times that session.

Wild Romeo then trialled very softly 11 days later, trailing the field home before again being turned out.

Connections are now banking on a slow-burning approach paying dividends at Albury before bigger targets are put in place.

To be ridden by Nick Heywood, Wild Romeo opened about $3.90 in early betting ahead of filly Sizzleist ($4.40), which is second-up for the local Donna Scott stable.

Earlier, on a strong betting meeting, another emerging Canberra sprinter gets his chance to break through in the opening Maiden Handicap over 1175m.

C’mon Wicksy, a lightly raced four-year-old in the Rob Potter stable, resumes for a second campaign off a five-month spell.

By Pride Of Dubai, C’mon Wicksy had three starts late last winter when well in the market, but his form was mixed and he was examined at length by vets after racing ungenerously in that latest outing at Bathurst.

Given plenty of work since without trialling, he is set to return a stronger performer, with both a tongue tie and winkers on for the first time.

Drawn a middle gate, C’mon Wicksy will be ridden by 1.5kg claiming apprentice Claire Ramsbotham for a long list of owners.

Across many wide open betting races, the meeting marks the two-month countdown to the big two-day Albury Cup carnival.
