A sleeping man was allegedly stabbed and covered in petrol by an intruder who has since been charged with attempted murder.

A 25-year-old from Camira has been accused of breaking into a house on Mollison Street in South Brisbane about 5.15am on September 13.

Sleeping there at the time was a 27-year-old West End man, who was allegedly stabbed in the torso.

The alleged attacker doused him in petrol before he was interrupted by another occupant, prompting him to run off.

Emergency services arrived minutes later, taking the victim to hospital where he remained in a serious but stable condition on Tuesday.

Police alleged the two men knew each other.

The Camira man was arrested near a Morayfield shopping centre about 9.30am on Monday.

He was charged with attempted murder and entering a dwelling with intent to commit a crime.

His case was mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday, with his next appearance set down for October 13.
