A search and rescue operation is under way after a man disappeared while swimming on the Sunshine Coast.

The man, aged in his 60s, was last seen in the water at Happy Valley in Caloundra about 2pm on Wednesday.

Water police, a helicopter, jet skis, and surf lifesavers are searching for the man.

A week ago, two people died in south-east Queensland waters.

An 18-year-old died at Buddina Beach, also on the Sunshine Coast, after going missing in the water about 4.15pm last Wednesday. His body was found that evening.

A 20-year-old man also died on the Gold Coast. He was seen struggling in the water off Main Beach, near Breaker Street, about 6.30pm last Tuesday before witnesses lost sight of him.

His body was found the following day.
