A teenager who died after accidentally shooting himself at a Seaford home can be revealed as an accused criminal allegedly involved in the violent abduction of a schoolboy who was dragged along a road and left with permanent brain damage.

Kiki Utkovic, 16, was playing with a homemade gun inside a home on Glen Alvie Street in Melbourne’s outer south-east about 4.30pm on July 27, when it fired.

Utkovic sustained critical injuries and was hospitalised at The Alfred.

Victoria Police confirmed on Tuesday the teenager had since died.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, but detectives are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter and the investigation is ongoing,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

Utkovic was charged, alongside other teenagers, following the 2023 abduction of a then-14-year-old boy who was walking home from school in Glen Huntly on September 4 when he was attacked.

The teen was in a coma for six days after he was pulled into a vehicle, and dragged for about 150 metres along the road after the car took off as he hung from a passenger door, a Children’s Court was told in October 2023.

He was then thrown from the vehicle and ran over. He sustained a permanent brain injury because of the attack, the court heard.

Utkovic’s death came as police seized another homemade gun, in an unrelated case, on Tuesday in Melbourne’s south-east.

Officers searched a Frankston hotel room and allegedly found a 3D-printed firearm, along with illegal drugs.

Two men – a 22-year-old from Frankston, and 33-year-old from Safety Beach – were charged with possessing a firearm as prohibited people, among other offences. They were both due to face Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
