On Sept. 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. Just before they did, Benjamin Franklin, 81 and too weak to speak, asked Pennsylvania delegate James Wilson to read his parting remarks, which were a lesson in humility for public debate.
