NSW Premier Chris Minns is among the dignitaries who will address the memorial service this evening.

Earlier on Thursday, he joined Jewish community members in Sydney’s eastern suburbs as part of events to mark the National Day of Mourning.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Sussan Ley will also address attendees at the Opera House, which will also observe video tributes for the 15 Australians who lost their lives at Bondi last month, in addition to prayers and memorial readings.

National minute of silence at 7.01pm

By Daniel Lo Surdo

A key aspect of this evening’s memorial service will occur at 7.01pm, when a minute of silence will be observed.

Organisers hope the minute’s silence at the Opera House will be replicated across the country, after Australians were encouraged to share in the moment of reflection as part of measures to mark the National Day of Mourning.

Households are also invited to light candles in remembrance at 7.01pm.

What to expect tonight

By Daniel Lo Surdo

Welcome to our live coverage of the National Day of Mourning memorial service, which will see Australians gather to remember the victims of the Bondi terror attack.

Dignitaries, politicians and representatives from the Australian Jewish community have started entering the Sydney Opera House this evening, where we’re expecting a collection of prayers, candle lighting, tribute videos, memorial readings, speeches and musical performances from 7pm.

The service has been named ‘Light Will Win: A Gathering of Unity and Remembrance’, and will be led and convened by the Chabad of Bondi, with assistance from other faith leaders, the federal government, and other community partners.

National institutions around the country will be illuminated this evening, as flags fly at half-mast across federal and NSW government buildings on Thursday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, NSW Premier Chris Minns, and Opposition Leader Sussan Ley will be among the guests at the memorial service.

Follow live as we bring you all the updates from the Opera House.
