Detective Inspector Dean Thomas, the head of Victoria Police’s homicide squad, said police believe there was a confrontation between two males in Game Lane, a laneway behind Champions Parade just before 9am.
The offender shot and killed the man in the laneway before fleeing in a vehicle.
“We also have reports of a vehicle being found burnt out in Amery Street in Reservoir. We don’t know if that is linked to this particular incident this morning,” Thomas said.
“We will work now to piece together what has gone on to identify those responsible.”
Thomas said police have not yet formally identified the man who was killed, but believe he is a 22-year-old from Wollert who was known to police.
“It’s being investigated as a fatal shooting. It appears very deliberate and obviously targeted,” he said.
At this stage police are not treating the incident as an underworld hit, Thomas said.
The incident is believed to have taken place opposite the Korin Korin Child and Family Centre kindergarten.
Traffic has been blocked on both sides of Champions Parade.
Thomas urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
