Police are investigating the suspicious death of a man whose body was found in front of a home in Melbourne’s north-east.

Emergency services were called to Linden Avenue in Ivanhoe around 6pm on Tuesday, where they found the body of a 27-year-old man.

Neighbour Martyn Wild told Nine News he and his wife were woken by two loud bangs around 5.12am on Tuesday.

“We thought initially it might be a car backfiring, maybe in [a] street nearby, but it didn’t really sound like a backfire,” Wild said.

“Almost 12 hours later, somebody from the apartments [nearby] was walking their dog, and he [saw the body] and called it in. There must have been a swarm of 20 to 25 police here, ambulance, fire brigade, you name it.”

The neighbour said it was disturbing the man’s body could have been there for 12 hours.

Another neighbour, Nick Robarts, told Nine News he also suspected a backfiring car when he heard yelling and then two bangs early on Tuesday morning.

Robarts said he went for a late afternoon walk about 12 hours later but did not see the body.

He said police arrived shortly afterwards and took his statement.

The man’s body was found outside a complex of five units. One unit is for sale and had an inspection scheduled for this weekend.

Gordon Hope of Miles real estate said all inspections had now been cancelled.

Hope said this was the first time he had had to cancel property inspections due to a homicide investigation.

“It’s a bit of a shock to the system,” he told The Age.

Hope said the owners of the property had spoken to police and were happy to assist the investigation.
