Police have arrested a man in Melbourne’s CBD after a verbal threat was made that compelled the city council to ask its staff to stay away from the area.
The threat, the exact details of which are unknown, prompted the City of Melbourne to text staff to stay away due to “the possible threat of an incident occurring on Bourke Street tonight” after 7pm.
A spokesperson said the council sent the text at the behest of police.
On Thursday evening, police revealed a 31-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested a fast food outlet on Swanston Street in the CBD. He is currently being questioned over the incident.
Police said the exact circumstances of the incident are still be incident are still being investigated.
“There is no threat to the community at this time,” police said in a late night statement. They revealed officers actively patrolled the CBD after the threat became known.
“Police have identified a person of interest, and the investigation remains ongoing,” police said in the statement.
