‘Lighthouse in the storm’: Melbourne nutrition influencer dies post-birth

A Melbourne nutritionist and influencer who died shortly after giving birth has been remembered as a deeply caring and generous woman.

Stacey Warnecke, known to her 19,000 followers online as NaturalSpoonfuls, suffered an “unforeseen and extremely rare complication” following the delivery of her first child in a home birth, her husband Nathan Warnecke said in a post on social media.

Stacey, who developed “low tox” recipes and shared them online, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved. The couple had been married for less than a year.

“I knew Stace for 9 amazing years, she was the light of my life and the reason I got up in the morning,” Nathan said.

“Words can’t do justice to how devastating this is for myself and everyone that knew and loved her. She was my lighthouse in the storm and the world is less bright without her in it.

“Stacey was a child of the universe, one that loved above all else to live a simple, stress-free life. She was most at home in nature, surrounded by trees and sand at her feet.”

Stacey was given a few moments with her newborn baby after delivering him.

“She held Axel when he was born, nursed him, saw that he was a boy and loved him. She loved him so much and still, continues to love him,” Nathan said.

The couple were adventurous and had travelled together to Norway, Switzerland and Sri Lanka. They were married in the Maldives last year, which Nathan described as “the happiest day of my life”.

But despite Stacey’s intrepid spirit, “her favourite pastime was reading a book with a mug of green tea and our French Bulldog, Winter, by her side”, Nathan said.

Jon Downie, a representative of the family who has launched an online fundraiser, described the couple as soulmates who dreamed of raising a family.

“They were excited for the birth of their child,” Downie said in a statement. “Stacey, however, was only able to experience the joy of her new baby boy for a few short moments.”

As well as her success in building a following on social media, Stacey founded a food content creation agency, Waffl, and had degrees from La Trobe and Curtin Universities.
