US pop star Katy Perry has denied sexually assaulting Ruby Rose, slamming wild allegations made by the Australian actor and model on social media as “categorically false” and “dangerous reckless lies”.
Rose made the accusation in a series of comments on the social media platform Threads on Monday (US time), while replying to a post by music website Complex highlighting Perry’s response to Justin Bieber’s headlining Coachella set on Sunday night.
The singer poked fun at Bieber for using his laptop on stage to play YouTube videos for a crowd singalong during his set, saying “Thank God he has Premium. I don’t wanna see no ads” in an Instagram post of herself and partner Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada, watching the set.
Below Collider’s post, Rose claimed: “Katy Perry sexual assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s--- what she thinks.”
In subsequent replies to other comments Rose went on to claim that she was in her early 20s when the alleged incident happened and it had taken “almost 2 decades to say this publicly”.
Rose went on to reference Perry’s hit song I Kissed A Girl and said that Perry “didn’t kiss me”, and then detailed the alleged assault, saying it had occurred while Rose was “‘resting’ on my best friends lap to avoid her”. Rose claimed that after the alleged act Rose’s eyes “snapped open and I projectile vomitted [sic] on her”.
She said she had subsequently told “the story publicly but changed it to be a ‘funny little drunk story’ because I didn’t know how else to handle it” and had kept it a secret because Perry allegedly agreed to help her obtain a US visa.
In a statement shared with US media, Perry representatives slammed the claims.
“The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false; they are dangerous, reckless lies,” Variety reported.
“Ms Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”
Representatives for Rose and Perry have been contacted for comment.
Originally from Melbourne, Rose has appeared in the US Netflix show Orange is the New Black, the films John Wick: Chapter 2 and The Meg and was eventually cast in the TV series adaptation of the DC character Batwoman in 2019.
