They subsequently arrested Westmeadows man Brandon Watts, 27, and on Sunday evening, charged him with murdering 23-year-old Bishop.

Watts fronted Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, where he did not apply for bail. He is next due in court on September 22.

Court documents alleged Watts murdered Bishop at Westmeadows between May 27 and May 28.

Bishop was last seen by his housemate at his home on Lalor Crescent in Sunbury – about 30 minutes’ drive from the raided Westmeadows property, according to Google Maps – on May 27.

The 23-year-old’s mother reported him missing on May 29, and his disappearance prompted a significant community effort to find him. Bishop’s family described his disappearance as out of character.

Three weeks ago, Bishop’s parents made an emotional plea for their son’s return, urging anyone with information to come forward.

“We just want him to know that we love him,” Bishop’s father, Travis, said.

“We just want him to be safe … we’ve had a lot of support, but we still haven’t gotten any closer to our son.”

Former AFL star Brendan Fevola issued a public call to “get Joshy home”, as Fevola knew Bishop from their involvement at the East Sunbury Football Club.
