Meanjin, the literary journal published since 1940 and funded by Melbourne University Press, will cease operations on Thursday.
A statement issued by MUP says the decision was made on “financial grounds”.

Professor Warren Bebbington, MUP chair, said the magazine’s final issue will be released in December.
“This is a matter of deep regret for all at Melbourne University Press, as Meanjin has reached its 85th year of a distinguished history, the past 17 years as an MUP imprint,” he said in a statement issued on Thursday.
“The decision was made on purely financial grounds, the board having found it no longer viable to produce the magazine ongoing.
“The two part-time staff of Meanjin were not involved in the decision, which led to their being made redundant this week.”
Meanjin has been a stalwart of the Australian literary scene for decades, having published authors including Helen Garner, Peter Carey, Michelle De Kretser, Alexis Wright and David Malouf.
