A father has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed his 34-year-old son at a Gold Coast home.

Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said the 54-year-old had called his nephew and “notified [him] of the incident”, after allegedly stabbing his son multiple times at a home on McCrae Court in Maudsland about 6.40pm on Monday.

“No one else was present at the time,” Mooney said.

Police said the 34-year-old son had moved back in with his father just weeks before he died.

When police arrived, they found the father in the lounge room.

“He was very quiet, and he certainly didn’t try to hide from us or anything like that,” Mooney said.

The 34-year-old had moved back into the home, near Helensvale, “several weeks” before he was killed, Mooney added.

He could not reveal where in the house the young man had been killed or which wounds proved fatal, but said the scene was “quite graphic”.

“[They are] very sad events … our thoughts go out to the family,” Mooney said.

Officers were yet to locate the alleged murder weapon on Tuesday afternoon, but were investigating “multiple knives in the house”, which police had seized.

The father was charged with one count of murder (domestic violence offence), and was scheduled to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

“We have no records of any domestic violence at that address between any of the parties that are living [there],” Mooney said.

“We’ve obviously spoken to a lot of family members. They’ve provided us with different versions of events and what’s been happening in that family environment.”

He said neighbours had not noticed a disturbance leading up to the incident, and the 54-year-old father was not cooperating with police.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to the community, and the state Homicide Victim Support Group was poised to help the surviving family members.
