A fan at the US Open made the headlines for stealing a hat from a child, but one went a step further by trying to take something out of Jannik Sinner’s bag.

After his comfortable win over Alexander Bublik in less than an hour and a half to reach the quarter-finals, Sinner walked over to the sidelines to give his towel to a supporter.

While he was distracted, someone reached over and tried to get into his bag, before he had his arm pushed back by the on-court security. Sinner looked around to see what had happened as the supporter moved their hands back.

Earlier in the tournament, a wealthy Polish businessman was filmed snatching a cap away from a child.

Kamil Majchrzak, a Polish player, signed autographs and handed his cap to a young boy in the crowd.

Only at that moment, Piotr Szczerek grabbed the hat from the child and put it in his wife’s bag as the boy protested as he held a yellow tennis ball.

Majchrzak put out a plea online to find the boy, and give him another hat, to make amends for the events that took place.

Majchrzak appealed to his fans on social media to help him get in touch with the young fan who lost out on the cap.

He was later filmed meeting the young boy, named as Brock, and gave him another signed cap and posed for photos with him.

Majchrzak also revealed he had given Szczerek the contact details for Brock’s mother so he could make amends.

“He also wanted to make things right, so I gave him the credentials for Brock’s mom on the same social media I was using to contact her,” Majchrzak said.

“So, maybe he can make things right himself.”

Szczerek later apologised and said: “Due to the situation that occurred during Kamil Majchrzak’s match at the US Open, I would like to unequivocally apologise to the injured boy, his family, all the fans, and the player himself.

“In the emotions, in the crowd’s joy after the victory, I was convinced that the tennis player was handing the cap in my direction – for my sons, who had earlier asked for autographs.

“This false assumption made me reach out instinctively.”

Sinner has won 25 straight Grand Slam matches on hard court, including the last two Australian Open titles and the US Open last year. He will face fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti on Wednesday.
