Australia’s leading scientific research organisation is to slash hundreds of jobs, with nearly all expected to be research positions.
The CSIRO told staff on Tuesday that between 300 and 350 jobs would be axed, according to a staffer speaking to The Age on the condition on anonymity.

The news comes after about 500 research support jobs were cut last year, along with a number of contractors.
The cuts came under immediate attack from the union representing staff. Susan Tonks, secretary of the CSIRO Staff Association, called it “a sad day for publicly funded science”.
Though it remains unclear what sections the job cuts will come from, rumours have circulated about the areas that would be hit hardest since senior executives in CSIRO’s manufacturing and data science departments left the agency earlier this year.
The cuts are unlikely to be the end of the pain for the agency. Bosses have told staff they still need to find another $80 million to $135 million in cuts to reach sustainability.
More to come.
