Mistake-ridden Q3 for both teams

By Hannah Kennelly

Hear that? That the sounds of the rapidly increasingly heart rates of Carlton fans at the MCG.

Talor Byrne had a nervous lopsided kick and it didn’t go anywhere near the middle posts. There have been mistakes galore for both teams but Carlton have missed many opportunities at goal.

With better accuracy, the Blues could be 36 points ahead by now

Can Carlton keep their composure?

By Hannah Kennelly

Carlton have made some messy and rushed errors during this third quarter, as the pressure of leading possibly creeps up.

Everyone’s looking a little sloppy and goal accuracy is leaving a lot to be desired right now.

But then there’s Tim Membrey who finally gives the MCG crowd something to cheer… or groan about. He snaps one for the Magpies and suddenly Carlton’s strong healthy lead is depleting.

Score: Carlton lead 7.8 (50) to Collingwood 5.9 (39).

Carlton notch three behinds....

By Hannah Kennelly

Frankie Evans had a shot at goal but went very wide (maybe he was hoping for a breeze to bring it back). Harry McKay follows with another wayward shot at goal.

McKay’s radar has been off tonight. He’s kicking across his body and it’s not working.

The Blues have had a few missed opportunities already this term. That’s three behinds within minutes. You can’t help but think these mistakes might leave the door ajar for a Collingwood comeback.

Jamie Elliott just took advantage of the Blues’ mistakes and kicked truly from a tricky angle to boot the Magpies’ first goal of the term.

“Gee they look like two ordinary teams out there,” commentator Kane Cornes says on Seven.

“The skill level could not be any worse.”

Blues open third quarter with a bang

What a start for Carlton!

Mitch McGovern has capitalised on a slick handball to boot a quick goal. Just moments later Adam Cerra has a shot, but only manages a behind.

Folks, this all happened within 42 seconds. This looks like it’s going to be a fast-paced term of footy in the dry conditions.

Score: Carlton lead 7.7 (49) to Collingwood 3.9 (27)

Can the Blues maintain their momentum, keep the fadeouts at bay?

By Hannah Kennelly

That’s the siren and the third quarter has begun.

“Carlton made some mistakes early, and they put that behind them, and then they started to hit some targets and move the ball well,” Jason Dunstall said on Fox Footy.

“It’s been a different-looking Carlton. Can they do it for four quarters?

“That’s what we’re waiting to find out.”

Half-time analysis

Now Collingwood fans are on the war path.

The umpires paid Carlton a 50-metre penalty during that second term and handed the Blues a certain goal because a Collingwood player pointed at the scoreboard.

It followed a free kick being paid against Magpies defender Jeremy Howe for a sling tackle on Carlton forward Matt Carroll.

Howe swung him around forcefully before dumping him hard into the deck, but Carroll’s head did not hit the ground.

Carlton lead at half-time after goal-fest

Some Carlton fans might have debated coming out to the MCG tonight, given the Blues’ shaky start to the season and the weather earlier today.

But I’m guessing the ones sitting in the MCG are feeling pretty great (for now, we still another half). That was a really strong second quarter from the Blues, with five consecutive goals and mega pressure throughout.

The Blues broke through the Magpies’ defensive zone and smashed them in contested possessions.

At the end of first term, Collingwood led by a point. At the end the second, Carlton are ahead by 14.

Score: Carlton lead (41) to Collingwood (27).

‘Pease don’t go to Tassie’: Fans’ plea at the MCG

By Hannah Kennelly

Fox Footy’s broadcast has cut to some Magpies fans in the stands, who don’t look too pleased with the Pies’ efforts so for.

However, there are some beaming little kids with a sign that says, “We love you Nick, please don’t go to Tassie”.

Moments later, Beau McCreery breaks Collingwood’s second quarter drought, thanks to a solid handball from Tim Membrey, and finally boots a goal.

Blues’ blitz continues

By Hannah Kennelly

The Blues have interrupted Collingwood’s pace and shut down their contested marks.

The game’s 100-game milestone man Nick Daicos has a running long shot at goal, but it hits the post. There’s a chorus of disgruntled, “ohhhhhh noooooos” from the crowd.

After a tough tackle, Matthew Carroll is given 50 metres and kicks truly.

That’s five consecutive goals now for the Blues.

A three-goal charge for the Blues

By Hannah Kennelly and Danny Russell

Bang, Bang, BANG.

The Blues have snatched the momentum back at the MCG with three consecutive goals this quarter (four if you count the one in Q1).

Brodie Kemp kicked across his body to boot another major. That’s the 24-year-old’s second goal tonight already.

The Blues fans in the stands are up standing and roaring. Blues coach Michael Voss either learnt his lesson, or heard the outside noise.

Unlike last week, he made sure skipper Patrick Cripps was on the ground to start the second term after last week’s disaster against Adelaide. Blues fans are glad he did.
