Brisbane Festival has begun for another year, and tomorrow night the city will be taken over by its flagship free event.

Riverfire is a massive fireworks display based on the Story Bridge from 7pm. Arrive early at the free viewing points and watch out for ADF fighter jets performing flyovers from 4.50pm.

In other festival events this weekend, Gems at QPAC is a dance trilogy performed by LA Dance Project and choreographed by superstar Benjamin Millepied.

The old Twelfth Night Theatre has been transformed into a 1920s style speakeasy for acrobatic cabaret Gatsby at the Green Light, which is running for most of the month.

Bad Nature at Brisbane Powerhouse is an ambitious dance piece about control, love, destruction, and hope, masterminded by Brisbane’s Australiasian Dance Collective and the Netherlands company Club Guy & Roni.

La Boite’s new comedy Congratulations, Get Rich! Is a supernatural tale set in a karaoke bar, while Queensland Theatre’s Back to Bilo tells the story of the outback town that intervened when a Sri Lankan family was put in immigration detention.

Brisbane Botanic Gardens are hosting Afterglow – a glowing dreamscape of lights, fire sculptures, and live performances.

Beyond the festival, the annual Picnic at Pemberley at the Abbey Museum in Caboolture invites Jane Austen fans to dress up and take part in Regency dancing, afternoon tea and period-appropriate games.

Matsuri Brisbane on Saturday celebrates Japanese cuisine and culture while Fesitalia brings opera, pizza, espresso, vino, gelato and all things Italian to the RNA Showgrounds.
