‘Stolen’ Skoda speeds near Dreamworld with police helicopter watching

By Julius Dennis

Two men have been charged after a police chase involving an allegedly stolen car with fake plates on the northern Gold Coast.

Police began tracking a Skoda Octavia near the Dreamworld theme park yesterday about 11am with the assistance of a helicopter.

Video taken from the chopper shows a white sedan weaving through traffic at high speed.

Tyre deflation devices were deployed twice when the car was in Upper Coomera, where the men jumped out of the car and got into a white Toyota Hilux.

Police tracked the utility to a shopping centre in Robina, where the men allegedly fled on foot.

A 35-year-old man from Parkwood was arrested in the shopping centre about 1.10pm, and a 22-year-old from Helensvale was arrested on a nearby street 20 minutes later.

It was alleged the Skoda car was stolen from Surfers Paradise seven weeks ago.

The 35-year-old has been charged with seven offences including two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of dangerous driving and possessing dangerous drugs.

The 22-year-old has been charged with six offences including two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count of dangerous driving.

The men are expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court today.
