Peak hour train delays due to signalling fault

By William Davis and James Hall

Train delays are impacting the peak-hour rush this morning due to a signalling fault on the Ferny Grove line for the second time in less than a week.

Services on all city lines are running up to 15 minutes behind schedule.

“There is a lot of congestion on the line,” a driver told her packed Cleveland-line train over the intercom at Roma Street Station about 7.30am.

Another train at Wilston station on the Ferny Grove line was reportedly at a standstill just after 8am.

One train arrived at Wilston station more than 10 minutes behind schedule, filled with passengers. Many waiting at the station couldn’t fit on board.

A Translink spokesperson said a signalling fault was behind the delays. It’s the second time in a week a signalling fault has caused delays on the Ferny Grove line.

Coalition partnership, Nampajinpa Price to blame for poor polling: Lambie

By Nick Newling

Senator Jacqui Lambie says the Liberal Party should reconsider its partnership with the Nationals after the party’s primary vote dived in recent polling.

The Coalition received just 27 per cent of the primary vote in both this masthead’s Resolve Political Monitor and The Australian newspaper’s Newspoll.

“The Nationals are dragging them from wherever they need to go. If they go any further to the right than where they went before the last election, I don’t see how that’s possibly going to give them the numbers that they need in the future,” Lambie told Sky News.

“The way they’re going right now, I just see them sitting [in opposition] for the next three or four terms.”

Lambie said last week’s focus on Jacinta Nampijinpa Price’s comments on migration from India had “really hurt” the Coalition, creating difficulty for Opposition Leader Sussan Ley.

“I hope Jacinta has a good look at herself because she can take some blame in that poll. Now, other people may not agree with that, but seriously, last week, that is all we heard about all week from the Liberal Party,” said Lambie, who founded her own party, the Jacqui Lambie Network.

Cars destroyed in Gold Coast car park fire

By Brittney Deguara

Plumes of black smoke filled the air over Sanctuary Cove after an electrical fault sparked a huge fire in a car park yesterday afternoon.

Fire crews said one car caught fire due to an electrical fault, and the blaze rapidly spread to the cars parked nearby.

When fire crews arrived, two cars were alight in the Sanctuary Cove car park, but two others were significantly damaged.

Witness Phil Heron said there was “a lot of very thick black smoke, a lot of loud explosions, popping as the tires burst.”

Two Nissans, a BMW and a Toyota Hilux were destroyed in the blaze.

Plibersek: Australia ‘needs a balance’ on immigration

By Emily Kaine

Amid increasing pressure from voters around immigration, Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek has doubled down on Labor’s policies, asserting that Australia “needs a balance” on immigration.

Resolve polling from this morning has revealed that 49 per cent of voters believe current permanent migration levels in Australia are too high, while 55 per cent say the government is handling immigration in an unplanned and unmanaged way.

“We need a balance, there’s skills we need in Australia… there’s plenty of regional parts of Australia that need that workforce. We need a balance. But immigration is down under us,” Plibersek told Sunrise earlier.

“I’d say the reason we brought immigration down last year by 36 per cent is because we understand that there’s pressures out there.”
