‘That’s smart batting’

That’s a sumptuous cover drive for four by Gill off Dwarshuis.

“That’s right out of the coaching manual,” Ravi Shastri says on Fox Cricket.

Bang. Now comes a lofted boundary over mid-on. And now a slice through gully to the boundary.

“That’s smart batting,” Shastri said.

Wow. Now he has blasted the left-armer through mid-wicket for four. Ouch. Four boundaries in the over.

India 0-35 after three. I dare suggest Dwarshuis will have a rest now.

Bold start by India

Gill charges paceman Xavier Bartlett and thumps him for four through mid-off. Gill and Abhishek have no fear tonight. That’s 19 runs off the opening two overs.

Abhishek given a life

Abhishek dances down the deck and thumps Dwarshuis over mid-off for four. Nice shot.

But next ball the left-hander is given a life when Glenn Maxwell spills what should have been a regulation catch at long-off.

“That’s the last person you think would drop that catch,” Indian great Ravi Shastri said on Fox Cricket.

That was a dramatic opening over.

India 0-11

Here we go ...

Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill are opening for India, with left-arm paceman Ben Dwarshuis given the new ball for Australia.

There are dark skies, so we’ll see if rain does come. There are plenty of cracks in the pitch. That’s one to keep an eye on.

Australia v India, or the Ashes: Michael Vaughan has his say

Here’s the Australian line up

Maxwell urges positive resolve

Glenn Maxwell has urged his teammates to retain a positive mantra with the series on the line.

The host nation appeared to be cruising to victory on the Gold Coast on Thursday, but crumbled late with the bat.

Maxwell told his teammate not to doubt themselves, with the Aussies trailing 2-1 in the series heading into the series finale at the Gabba.

“We probably second-guessed ourselves,” Maxwell said.

“We just need to take that first positive option.”

Toss of the coin ...

Mitch Marsh has won the toss and Australia will bowl first.

“It’s a chance to draw the series, lots to play for,” Marsh said.

Australia have an unchanged side.

Taking the ‘axe’ to the Aussies

Axar Patel was the star of India’s win on Thursday night, with a fine all-round performance pivotal in a 48-run win at Carrara.

The visitors, ultimately, defended 167 with ease. The home team had done well to hold India to below 180, and were in control in reply at 1-67, but the wheels soon fell off.

Patel claimed the first two wickets of Australia’s innings, and conceded only 20 runs from his four overs. This came after his late-innings 21 off 11 deliveries had given the tourists a decent score to defend.

When Tim David (14) fell, Australia was 4-91, but they lost 7-28 from that point.

Josh Philippe (10) and Glenn Maxwell (2) were dismissed in consecutive overs, while Marcus Stoinis (17) and Xavier Bartlett were out off consecutive balls (2).
