Independent senator David Pocock has called Trump’s attacks on the United Nations “dangerous” and criticised his denial of climate change, following the divisive address the US President made at the UN yesterday.

“I think it’s very dangerous to be attacking the UN like this. The UN does its work. Say, on Gaza, through the ICJ, through others. It’s up to states, countries around the world, to actually play their part, and I think that’s where we’ve seen the failure. We’ve seen the failure of countries like the US to actually step up and act.

“And as to his comments on climate change, yet again, we’re seeing world leaders side with the fossil fuel industry rather than actually putting the future of the people in places that we love as humans are on the line when it comes to climate change,” Pocock said on Nine’s Today this morning.

Appearing alongside Pocock was Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie, who said that “Trump’s contempt” for the UN “really [shone] through” in his address.

“We know various people have various opinions when it comes to the UN and the General Assembly... As we’ve seen these past couple of days, he makes no secret of his disdain for the institution.

“I think from the President’s speech, you can say he’s a sceptic about the effectiveness of the United Nations,” McKenzie said.
