The public are being asked to avoid the Calders area of Edinburgh

Police firearms officers have responded to reports of a man with a bladed weapon in Edinburgh.

The public is being advised to avoid the Calders area of the city amid concerns of possible stabbings.

It is understood an emergency response has been in place in the area between Sighthill and Wester Hailes since before 09:00.

The Press Association reported people in the area had said a number of people may have been stabbed.

Firearms officers were called to the scene

William Ramsay, who lives in the area in the west of the city, said he believed the man with the weapons had entered the stairwell of his building.

"He smashed the local shop, possibly stabbed two people unconfirmed," he told the Press Association.

"Armed police, dogs been here for about two hours."
