Quintal enters the fray
By
Lots of back and forth over the last few minutes but no incision from either side in attack. The Wanderers, though, are seeing more of the ball, meaning Sydney’s threat is now coming predominantly on the counter.
They’ve also made another sub: Tiago Quintal is on for Ahmet Arslan, much to the pleasure of The Cove, who signalled their appreciation when his name was read out by the match MC.

Meanwhile, in Malawi...
By
… it’s 1-0 to the Matildas already, after five minutes. Emily van Egmond was the goalscorer.
I’m tipping she’ll have more joy in that game than her old man will from this one.
Subs for both sides
By
Gary van Egmond has seen enough.
The interim Wanderers coach has made a triple change: Kosta Barbarouses, Hiroshi Ibusuki and Ryan Fraser have all come on for Brandon Borrello, Jai Rose and Steven Ugarkovic.
And Ibusuki hasn’t had to wait long for a chance, rising high to get a header away … and Fraser has made an immediate impact too, breaking into space and forcing a corner kick with a shot that was on target had it not been blocked by a Sydney FC player.
Thurgate takes the corner … and it’s nodded onto the crossbar and out!
Meanwhile, here’s two changes for Sydney FC: Al Hassan Toure and Wataro Kamijo off, Akol Akon and Rhys Youlley come on. Good shift from the goalscorer.

Wanderers denied an equaliser! Handball!
By
That makes it interesting.
The Wanderers have plundered an equaliser via Bozhidar Kraev, after a decent spell of possession resulted in a cross going into the box, Brandon Borrello’s header coming off the bar via Devenish-Meares’ save, and Kraev bundling in the rebound … but wait a minute, that will not stand!
Replays show that Kraev handled the ball as he shaped to header it in.
Not intentional, but according to the rules, that means the goal cannot be counted. And now we have confirmation.
It remains 1-0 to Sydney FC.

Sky Blues on top, Okon jnr on fire
By
Sydney FC have started the better side - which they have been and, well, just are. They should be up by more. They almost just had a goal via a falcon on a Wanderers player. It’s been that sort of night for the hosts.
There was a real moment of class before, too, from Paul Okon jnr, who absolutely mogged Jai Rose, dispossessing him next to the byline while somehow managing to keep the ball in play, before then gliding into space despite pressure closing in on him. That kid is going places.

We’re back for the second half
By
… and the Wanderers have made one change, with Phillip Cancar off and Alex Gersbach on as his replacement.
Hopefully that can inspire something from … well, someone.
The second half is under way.
The Matildas are about to kick off in Malawi
By
If you’re after more football tonight - or different football; I wouldn’t blame you - then it’s worth reminding you that at 9pm, the Matildas kick off their FIFA Series of friendlies at 9pm AEST against Malawi.
That game is on Paramount+ if you’re keen. We’ll have a report on that match up later tonight or in the morning. It’ll be their first game since the Asian Cup final; you can read a little bit from Sam Kerr on how the team has digested that heartbreaker, and what they want out of this window, right here.
HALF-TIME: Wanderers 0-1 Sydney FC
By
And there’s the whistle to signal the end of the first half.
Fairly placid stuff, overall. The Sky Blues have been the better side and have the only goal so far - from Al Hassan Toure - to show for it, but they’ve been made to worry quite a few times in defence by the Wanderers.
Here are the half-time stats. Sink your teeth into these numbers, eh.
Borrello rattles the woodwork!
By
There’s a bit of life left in the Wanderers.
Brandon Borrello has just had a crack at goal from just outside the box, and Sydney FC are lucky that skidded out off the top of the crossbar, and didn’t clip the underside, because otherwise we’d be talking about an equaliser. Devenish-Meares was beaten.
That shot had some venom about it. Crisp connection by Borrello. Not quite good enough, though.

Panta-mime villain goes into the book
By
Pantazopoulos now cops a yellow card for bumping down Stamatelopoulos as he threatened to break Western Sydney’s defensive line and chase down a long ball.
That’s a classic professional foul: if it didn’t happen, he would have gone one-on-one with Lawrence Thomas, so he had to do it, and he has to pay the price.
